September 2018 marks the 25th Anniversary of our Creative Director Paula Rooney’s floristry career. Today’s Spotlight travels through Paula’s flower journey from her introduction to the industry to a successful internationally recognised entrepreneur.
As the head of the hugely successful Paula Rooney Floral Design, Paula has an unwavering focus and her attention to detail extends to every aspect of her business. With a considerable amount of hard work and dedication, Paula continues to use her experience to inspire her many clients and growing team.
Paula’s Flower Journey
Paula embarked on her floral design studies at 18 utilising her creative energy and honing her skills over the following 5 years. To this day, Paula acknowledges the benefit of this foundation of classical training as the strong basis to her work.
In 1999 Paula took the exciting opportunity to join the team of the luxury cruise liner QE2. It was here, whilst working initially in the gift shops and subsequently in the on board high end fashion stores that Paula’s experience in luxury customer service and attention to detail began. In busy times Paula was required to assist the QE2 florist. Seeing this level of luxury floristry, not only on the ship but also in the world’s top hotels, inspired Paula to return to her first passion- flowers.
After a number of years working on the QE2 Paula returned home to open her first shop just outside Liverpool before moving closer to the centre of the city specialising in corporate installations. In a bid to expand her knowledge, Paula made the decision in 2006 to move to the now globally renowned company The Christmas Decorators when it was still in its infancy. This position allowed Paula to create installations for luxury hotels and private residences. It was here that Paula happened upon a design book by the celebrated florist Preston Bailey, now her friend. Her imagination was instantly captured!
A position as a Florist Manager at an events company in Manchester was Paula’s next step. It was here that Paula honed her management and production skills at corporate events and weddings.
Having studied for her Higher Diploma at The Welsh College of Horticulture in 2009 Paula made the move south to Hampshire and started working with The Real Flower Company. After the birth of her first daughter in 2011 Paula decided to start her own venture and use her many years of experience to build her own brand. Each year has introduced yet more exciting new clients, bespoke luxury weddings and corporate contracts, not least the company’s continuing floral residency at the world renowned Four Seasons London at Ten Trinity Square.
Paula’s elevation from sole trader to successful brand is testament to her hard work, passion for creativity and sleek service. With a strong and innovative team behind her, the future continues to look rosy for Paula!
I truly believe that when you are working in an industry and role that you love it doesn’t feel like work. Throughout my career I have had wonderful opportunities that have come with sacrifice and hard work but which have brought varying experiences resulting in huge success. Nothing worth having is easy! I have always sought adventure in floral design and continue to embark on the courageous side of bringing my client’s bespoke visions alive. I have a strong team of females behind me who bring their imagination and motivation to all we do at Paula Rooney Floral Design.
Paula has many wonderful memories from her 25 years in the flower design industry but there are some magical moments that certainly stand out. Her specific highlights include being featured in the renowned publication Brides Magazine’s ‘How wedding experts get married’ focusing on her stunning 2015 Four Seasons Hampshire wedding and having her flowers grace the cover of the Brides Magazine Diamond Edition. Paula has loved every destination wedding she has designed and is excited to see where in the world she will be taken next. In 2015 Paula was thrilled to win prime categories at The Wedding Awards. She has also been delighted to accept the award for Best Flowers in the City for her Four Seasons London at Ten Trinity Square installations 2 years in a row.
Paula has her sights set on more stunning destination weddings stretching across the globe as well as connecting with the world’s best planners. Paula is excited to continue her work with luxury hotels and one day realise her dream of exhibiting installations at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The team are excited to one day make this a reality! The future holds exciting new projects as the company launches its online shop and flower school. Here’s to the next 25 years of Paula’s story!
